The contest was created in 1995 by the Smithsonian Institution's National Postal Museum, which administered it until delegating responsibility to the Washington Calligraphers Guild in 2001. Beginning in 2003, the National Association of Letter Carriers agreed to partner with the Washington Calligraphers Guild to sponsor the contest. In addition to promoting the art of calligraphy, the Graceful Envelope Contest celebrates the role of letters in binding people together and serves as a reminder that the people who deliver the mail are career government employees who take pride in their work and care about the communities they serve.
I am attaching a link here so you can see the winners as well as the children's entries. It seems that many people get involved. Perhaps someday I will. It's a goal that I am striving for.
I also wanted to say that I got permission from some of the International Envelope Exchange participants to post the envelopes that they sent to me this year. It is a rule, that I was reminded of when I accidently posted them and sent the link to the coordinator, that you are not allowed to do so without permission. She nicely told me that one of the stipulations was NOT to post them anywhere without consent. So, now that I have contacted them all and received permission.... I will share a few with you! I think they are so cool! Notice how some of them coordinate with the stamps.
