My FIRST EVER shooting experience!

I probably NEVER would have shot a gun if it hadn’t been for my nephew Jason visiting Texas for the Thanksgiving holidays from Colorado. He is very competent in this field as he is a trained Law Enforcement Officer and teaches NRA safety classes. I was confident that he was the right person to give me all the pointers and instruction I needed. He was very thorough and serious about it all.  I definitely felt safe around him… of course, I need a lot more training and only wish he lived closer...

I think it would have been better if I had shot  a gun for the first time OUTSIDE rather than a shooting range as my mom has shot OUTSIDE many times, but once she entered the range, she was all jittery and jumped every time she heard someone else’s gun go off at another lane (there were ten or so lanes in total and most of them were being used).  She decided after getting hit by the shell of my first couple of rounds that she wasn’t really all that into it and opted to go “grocery shopping”.I couldn't convince her to even shoot one round... when she is certain... you cannot convince her. Her face was stoic and sincere... she just wanted "out".
It was quite disconcerting for me, too, and I jumped every time I heard a BOOM from the pistol in the next lane… ha, otherwise, I probably would have hit the target on the black EVERY time. LOL!

Seriously, though, even though I had really good ear gear on and goggles, I was still “annoyed” with the surrounding sounds and the fact that every time I shot there was the cartridge that flipped out and hit the wall to my right, ricocheting into my hair or head. NOT good, but I persevered and shot until I could shoot no longer… Not that I didn’t have enough ammo… I bought two different boxes (9mm
and 45) of 50 rounds each, but the guns were quite heavy and to hold out my arms and steady my shot every time made me quite sore in my shoulders so after shooting about 5 or 6 guns both 9mm and  45’s a few times, my hand, arms and neck/shoulders were really throbbing. What a woos!   I kept thinking about the calligraphy class that I had to teach the next day and wondered whether I was going to be able to do it without pain and if I could do it with accuracy.  I managed, but was a little sore… nothing a round of Aleve couldn’t cure, though.

I think it will be much better when I actually get a gun with a grip that FITS me. That was the main obstacle we found for me.  Since I have a hand the size of a ten year old or younger, that was a major challenge.  Oh well… They did show me one gun which they had in one of their cases which they would have sold to me called a Walther PPQ, butI wasn’t prepared to BUY one that day… and they wouldn't let you try it out first.  Afterall, it was only my first day ever to shoot a gun.

The gun I am holding in the picture is a 40 caliber Sig, semi automatic.  It was Jason’s and the one he trained my mom and I on… showing us how to load the mag and advance the cartridge into the barrel, how to make the trigger pressure shorter…etc.  He was great…. He has a flashlight and a laser target on his, which you can see, as well as night time sights that glow in the dark… thought that was a great idea… I think I would upgrade to that for sure.  I know that the flashlight and the laser
probably would make it that much heavier, though it seems like a great option.

Overall, it was a …. TRIP!  I’m not sure I’m “hooked” as Jason would have liked me to be, but I can see a purpose for a gun in the home and probably will get one for self defense, although I doubt that I will get a concealed handgun permit.  I just don’t see me carrying one… but as they say, you should always have something to defend yourself….

It was scary… the first shot. It was loud and I didn’t know what to expect.  It really rocked my little body, too… the whole muzzle went up and on the .45, the recoil made my body go backwards even.  Jason giggleed at me….In my town, for the past 8+ years, I have passed the indoor shooting range never to step foot in there... and wondered many times when I saw "MONDAY is LADIES Day" what it would be like in there... NOW, I know.  I remember just before entering the facility for the first and only time I had that feeling like I was about to ride a roller coaster.. you know that butterfly in your stomach feeling.. like you have to go to the bathroom.... NOW, I know what it feels like and I will be more apt to walk in there with more confidence next time and feel a little more comfortable handling a gun. I have a long way to go, though.

On my last shot, when the gun was empty… it smoked…..If I weren’t so tired and still a little in beginner’s shock I would have blew on it and said,  “Go ahead, make my day”…. LOL!  I was beat
by then. though. I DID IT!!! Something that i never thought I'd ever do in my lifetime... another check off my bucket list...even though I had never put it there.  Thanks, Jason!
I'd hate to be on the other side of my gun if someone enters my home!!

Hummingbird Moths....

Today…. out Kev’s window.. while he was playing accordion, he spotted something
fluttering in his peripheral vision and he thought they were hummingbirds…a few baby ones..

He got out his camera and went outside but they all disappeared.. He snapped a couple
inside through the window and this is what he came up with….. Snowberry Hummingbird Moths.

We don't have any of the plants which they are drawn too, but they must like the Agerita's which are in bloom right now 'cause that is the bush that is right outside of his window.
SOMEONE (probably Taz... across the street... whose whole back yard is a fruited plain.. which include succulent tomatoes) in the neighborhood  certainly is, though…

Go figure.. something so UGLY that goes SPLAT can be so pretty when it grows up!

Looks like a bumblebee up close, kinda!

Do they really have those curly tendrils? WOW!  Love it!

Farmer's Market.. I love summer!

In my little town, we have a Farmers Market that comes to us every Tuesday.  I love it when May rolls around, despite the temps, 'cause that means fresh produce from the Farmers.  This year, I have been buying most of my stuff from Star Market out of Rockdale... mainly 'cause I know the folks who own and work that farm.  They are, actually, the breeders of my three Doxies.  Lately, they have some really good tomatoes and peaches... but TODAY, for some reason, they were not represented there.

This "farmer" *in photos* is in from Elgin and they were "making a killing" as they were the only ones there.  Another vendor is usually selling their goods, too, which I get my cherry tomatoes from, but for some reason ... they were absent today as well. BOOO!  So, I ended up getting some green beans, cherry tomatoes, regular Early Girl tomatoes and some red onions from them.  I came home and cooked up the green beans and red potatoes which I got last week from another vendor.  I can't wait to taste them... Grilled some chicken and voila!!! Time for dinner... bye!

Happy July... it's almost Christmas!

Lots has been going on since I last checked in..... not sure that I want to bore you with it all, but I like to keep track of it myself and this is kinda the way I do it....

In the last month.... Kevin bought a Hohner, Panther,  "Button" Accordian and is "going to town". He has only had it about two weeks and can play about 10 songs (all in the key of C)  which he taught himself, already.  Naturally, he would be able to play it, but I just wondered how long it would take him to figure it all out. I picked it up and found it most difficult.  There are way too many things to think about... You got the bellows... IN AND OUT.. which give you a different note when you play it either way... like a harmonica... then you have the melody notes on the left and the bass notes on the right.  WOW!  You can tell his little brain is really working when he is trying to play a song.... Ever since I have known him, he pretty much already knew how to play everything and watching him learn something new never looked as "frustrating and challenging" as this instrument.
My favorite song he plays so far is Amore.... "When the moon hits the sky like a big pizza pie..... it's Amore!"  Reminds me of our incredible Gondola ride in Venice as we were serenaded by the best of the best in Italy... well, at the time, I suppose.  They were on their cell phones when they weren't playing.... what was so urgent that you couldn't enjoy a gondola ride with Texans?  LOL! Get off that phone!!!!

I started teaching a Copperplate class to six newbies at my home and will continue throughout the summer.   They are doing quite well... for only their first lesson.  I offer them the opportunity to send me their practice sheets during the month while we don't meet, I critique them and send them back so they are practicing right.... here is an example of how I mark up their papers.  This coming Sunday will be the second lesson and then I will really find out if they are practicing like they promised they would do. I know three of them are... just not sure about the other three... I have not
seen any evidence as of yet...

A very good friend had a brunch at her house to bring together most of the pointed pen folks in the guild.  She just moved to Sun City recently and it was so nice touring her new home and seeing everyone in the summer, which is very unusual since we don't meet as a guild except for Study group and that has changed a little due to the library's conflicting schedules.  She really did it right.  What a pleasure to be treated to a wonderful, home cooked meal with lots of TLC.  She even used her special silver and china .. I felt spoiled rotten... Anita is the best!
Shrimp and Veggie pasta YUM!
She even did all the place cards in
a contemporary pointed pen which she just learned.

Chocolate Mousse

We are meeting later in the month for study group which is later than we normally do.... Hopefully, we will get quite a few people there helping us with our big fundraiser in the Fall like we did last year.   It was for the Texas book Festival in October where we had a booth and sold our custom, hand made bookmarks.... to order. There is a lot of preparations to it, though, since we have to have all the paper cut, the holes punched, the designs on them as well as the ribbon threaded and a line drawn in pencil.   Luckily, we are starting a little earlier than we did last year.

I haven't been doing as well lately being off Cayston every other month.  The doc and I have been trying to find a regimen where I can be healthy on my "off" month as well as my Cayston month, but so far we haven't come up with anything and I am just hanging on for dear life.  I have tried five different drugs, both oral and inhaled, and none of them seem to work.  Not sure what our next step is.  It's amazing the difference which one drug can make and how it can affect me in the opposite way when I am not taking it.  I feel like a totally different person entirely. Wish me luck and send prayers up my way...

Aloha, Fleckie!  "Get this off me!!"
The doggy woggies are livin' life to the fullest, as usual.. spoiled rotten.  They are getting through the summer the best way they know how... by sleeping through most of it.. LOL!.    I am going to Houston to a Calligraphy retreat toward the end of the month and will be taking a workshop in San Antonio in October.... other than that... I am just teaching and doing jobs here and there when they come in.  Taking it a little easier than I have in the past few years.... I am very happy the presidency is over... STILL!  What a relief, although I really did like leading the guild and having an influential way to make a difference.

We are going on our 30th year for the birth of the guild next year so there will be lots of work for many hands to do.... looking forward to that as well as the Southwest Calligraphy Conference will meet here in January which we are already working on.

That's all for now..... everything is blooming and things are looking like summer now.... loving the Farmer's Market on Tuesdays... where my favorite Farmer (and breeder of our puppies) sells yummy fruits and veggies. I always get the tomatoes and sometimes other things which are in season. Bye for now.
PS... OH, I think the best news I have heard all summer is that GABI is pregnant and due in the Fall..November... Can't wait! I hope it's a boy!  This is her little, adorable girl, Ella.  I just love her.

Happy Birthday to Me!

So, I get this "cake mix" from Paulie for my birthday and
decide that it looks too good to sit in a box...
So, I melted the butter and the chocolate chips together.....

Mixed it all together and added it to the dry mix...

They said to beat the egg whites and cream of tartar separately...
and then fold that into the chocolate mixture...

Yum.... it smelled so good while it was baking!!

Here is the cake.. just out of the oven....
and our "Farmer's Market" tomatoes from Sharon's Star Market Farm....
