You'll see lots of them here. Loved this quote: There’s something sacred about reading a blog post on someone else’s site. It’s like visiting a friend’s house for a quick meal ’round the breakfast table. It’s personal—you’re in their space, and the environment is uniquely suited for idea exchange and uninterrupted conversation. In many ways, we should be treating our blogs like our breakfast tables. Be welcoming & gracious when you host, and kind & respectful when visiting.” – Trent Walton

Old Settler's Music Festival 2012

Taking a break down by the creek...
Many people had that same idea.
It's already the last day in April.  I know that time is passing quickly, but this is ridiculous.  This month has been a busy one for me and May looks like it will be almost the same.  We went to the Old Settler's Music Festival a week ago and had a great time.... We didn't camp down at Camp Ben McCulloch, at the Salt Lick in Driftwood, but we did get a day pass and it was just perfectly, beautiful, sunny weather. It was warm,  not hot since the breeze was just often enough to cool you down.  We took it easy and watched the few bands that we wanted to.... they seemed to be on different stages, back and forth throughout the day so we had to go past the ice cream stand and food vendors and all of that several times... needless to say, we probably ate and drank more than usual.... it just smells so good!! The Salt Lick BBQ is always one of our favorites and we eat there whenever we are nearby, which is not very often...unfortunately.  It is a very well known icon in Austin and a MUST DO if you like BBQ.  Driftwood is about 20 minutes outside of Austin and very convenient to get to from the Airport.  This year was the 25th anniversary and it was great!  Old Settler's used to be AT Old Settler's Park in Round Rock, which is only about 10 minutes from our house, but after they moved, it is a lot harder to get there for the entire weekend because it's about an hours drive instead of 10. I don't/can't camp anymore.  I am TOO high maintenance, and I don't mean just needing a shower and pampering...I could do it in motor home with power, but without it, I wouldn't survive without my nebulized breathing treatments which I take daily!  The last time we camped, it was about 8-10 years ago and we had a tent... without a potty... and that just doesn't work, I've found, as I've grown older.  Anyway...

Some of the highlights of the festival were, of course, was seeing lots of old Bluegrass friends, whom we don't get to see very much... actually, some we only see at that festival.  Lately, though, our friend Randy has had some parties where we have been able to reconnect with old friends in the bluegrass scene which is nice. We gabbed lots and watched some shows with Shawn and Tom D. whom we miss terribly.

Sarah Jarosz was there... better than ever, with Nathanial on cello and Alex on fiddle.  We just love them and they keep getting better.... and older.  Sarah played this festival TEN years ago, when she was ONLY ten and won the youth Talent Competition for the first time they had it and now, at 20 and a grammy-nominated artist and student in Boston at the New England Conservatory of Music, she was back entertaining us on the main stage at Old Settler's. It's her old stomping ground and you could tell that she was very happy to be "home" as she grew up only 9 miles away in Wimberly, Texas.

Other notable sets we saw were Audie Blaylock, Doyle Lawson, Dale Ann Bradley with Steve Gulley and Psychograss with Darol Angor and Tony Trishka. We were gabbing the whole, practically, so I didn't get to snap any photos!   There was lots more music, but we were really there for the BLUEGRASS.

The only thing we MISSED this year was seeing our old friend from
Rhode Island, who makes the trek every year to attend, Gar Babich.
We had no cell service and never ran into him.

To commemorate the 25th Anniversary, Judy Knopp Svrek created this
quilt with all the old T shirts from past festivals... How cool is that?
more of the quilt!
